WEEKEIGHT
TEMPLATE CONTINUED

Image
Adam Fuss, My Ghost (Butterfly Daguerreotype), 2001
Height 61cm x Width 50.8cm
Silver coated copper plates
this  print has been displayed in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London under the exhibtion of The Shadow Catchers 13th Oct 2010 - 20th Feb 2011, where five interbationall visual artists show their skills and techniques through camera-less photography. the space consiits of separate rooms for each artist as well as five four minture films on a loop, of the image makers demonstrating their techniques, glancing around their studios and sharing their creative ideas and inspirations.

Process
Fuss has been adopting a process that first developed in the 1830s by Louis J. M. Daguerre. The silver coated copper plates are exposed to iodine vapors to form light sensitive silver iodine. The image then develops using mercury fumes and then fixed in a warm solution of sodium chloride. The metallic surface creates a mirror finish when polished that is most noticeable on the areas with the least amount of light exposure. However the image was intentionally over exposed to achieve such a bright, vivid shimmering hue. The art of such a unique technique is slowly fading due to technological advancement and the highly toxic chemicals.

Context of Work
Fuss’s fascination of wanting to discover the unseen, is demonstrated by his simplistic symbolism and metaphorical meanings. He aims for his audience to question the formations in his pieces, which evoke spiritual elements and universal themes of life and death.

WEEKSEVEN
TEMPLATE

following from last week
we were told to select a photograph
with a description of its printing method
now
with a wider knowledge of processing
i have decided to research
the archaic cyanotype
below is the template we must use
demonstrating an example of
image space
a description of the image
the development
and the context of the art itself

capturing still frames of elements such as smoke and water
creates these amazing ghostly textures.

WEEKSIX
CYANOTYPES

this week was the paris trip
due to economical reasons
the trip was inaccessable to myself
so Rosy (darkroom tutor)
was lovely enough to organise a work shop
for those like myself
south bound.
camerless images!
the 153 year of process of cyanotypes has not greatly developed
however
the medium has a lot to thank from
technological advancements.
the cyanotype was the first successful method of printing
alternatively.
the modern way of creating an image
is simply printing a digital file
as a negative
on to acetate.
then an layer of
iron salts and potassium ferricyanide
is brushed (much like painting) onto cartridge paper
and allowed to dry.
By securing the acetate negative over the top
the frame is then placed into ultra-voilet light to be exposed.
after an exposure time the images are then left to soak in cold running water
washing off the chemicals
leaving a "prussian blue" image
and then hung to dry.

WEEKFIVE
NARRATIVE

what is narrative?
"Narrative is a structure that helps define content and form.
 This can be applied to
story, prose, poetry, music, painting, photography
and any other form of visual art"

This gave an insight on how to make our images.
with an attractive narrative
a photograph can completely alter a perception
and a first impression.
whether the image itself holds a scene
or has text beside explains the piece
all image must have a focus and purpose
for example Gilbert & Georges work
may seem strange and abstract
but the connotations behind their work
touch political and social issues that run deeper than the ink.
another Artist which address universal issues
beyond the aesthetics is Sally Mann
who photographed the American South in the 1970s.
Mann is renown for her series “Immediate Family”,
where her subjects are her young children in an "evocative and resonant landscape",
who often appear nude.
The children are captured in a
"playful behavior in such graceful serendipity,"
however her prints have always attracted controversy.
"This worked in her favour "as this brought her work publicity;
therefore her audience grew in size.
Mann’s images have a haunting yet dreamy atmosphere,
this was because her photographs were often taken through damaged lenses.
This resulted in prints with "shifted focus, scratches and light leaks."

Jessie, Emmet and Virginia

"Sally Mann has captured childhood as many adults wish it to be, not as a series of trivial events and encounters, but rather as a grand gothic narrative bathed in the Virginia sun.

WEEKFOUR
SCANOGRAPHY CONTINUED

After test-driving the flatbed scanners
i was told by my tutor to take into account a narrative for my display piece
i went home and looked around for inspiration
i discovered souvenirs from my holiday in Cuba over the summer
it also brought back memories of a month of despair.
July 12th my Grandmother, Doris Weller passed away.
This piece demonstrates the chaos and mess or our families emotions and mind states
i have also involved little possessions of hers
as well as trinkets representing our family getaway
and our resolution of coping with a depressing time.

WEEKTHREE
INTRODUCTION TO SCANOGRAPHY

“Scanography is photographing
without a camera by using a scanner to create hyper-real images.”
READMORE
this week we had an intro
to the university's digital suite
using Apple MACs,A3 flat-bed scanners and Photoshop provided.
we were told to bring in objects
ie. post cards, photos, leaves
of this to represent the week.
images are created by placing objects
onto the glass plate to produce
beautiful compositions of natural objects, paper & portraits.
the colours are vivid and bright with incredible detail
there is also depth of field!

STUART NELSON
http://www.snelsonphoto.com/

after testing my ideas
i decided to see what other artists do
to take the process to the next level
Nelson uses an Epson Perfection 4990 Photo scanner.
His “images are mostly composed directly on the glass of the scanner.”
In some cases he scan objects such as
"paper, bark, flowers, leafs, crushed cans, some liquids, very old photos and more.”
From a painting background, Nelson edits the files in Photoshop to “manipulate colors.”
He also takes into account the “scanner always produces the same cold unflattering light”
so by adding warm tones into his prints this is avoided.

GILBERT & GEORGE

Today we where introduced to the work of the pair G&G through a DVD
we then had to post our opinions of their work on an online discussion
comparing their earliest and latest work

Their 70s peiecs are titled
DIRTY WORDS PICTURES

And their latest collections

MY RESPONSE
FEEDBACK

"I thought I would do a general view of the response of Gilbert & Georges work
before I research and construct my own opinion.
Just to get my head around everything.
I have noted the overall reactions from the course of Gilbert & Georges work,
and everyone is pretty much on the same page.
The simple fact that the artistic pair have lost their dramatic touch in their latest work.
The subject matter of their pieces
focus on society of the given eras,
and there is a correlation of the issues
along with the shooting and processing techniques Gilbert & George have adapted to."

before i begun taking my own pinhole images
i wanted to research other artists and their take on the medium
