WEEKONE
INTRODUCTION TO PINHOLE PHOTOGRAPHY

after being told in freshers week that
our breif was to create a pinhole camera using a drinking can
i wanted to know how this worked so i could have a full understanding of it.
photographic paper is inserted into the can and slowly exposed by the tiniest beam of light
which is interesting as photography is usually associated with lens and buttons
this is called Camera Obscura where camerless images are made.
here are some examples of the levels of creativity people have reached
the key to this project is patience
on our first session Justin Quinnell aka Mr Pinhole
did a presentation on the genre and techniques behind the mysterious process.

Quinnell specialises in pinhole photography
with his homemade equipment fashioned from empty drink cans,
which he demonstrated clearly how to make ourselves.
the cans hold an o.25mm aperture and photographic paper
which result in an unlimited about of depth of field.
the smaller the pin hole the more precise the image.
his work reflects his eccentric persona
The two selected images are from different collections
from a variety of series he has produced over the years.
The first is from MOUTHPIECE,
which consists of image taken from the inside an open mouth.
The second shows the camera attached to Bristol’s Clifton Suspension Bridge
which was exposed for an entire six months,
which illustrates the light streaks of the sun’s light trail changing course.

  1. Good to see you have turned your work into a blog - something I have yet to master. Looks a good start which will come alive when you upload your images. Sorry to hear about your grandmother but it sounds like you have created something with your memories and her possesions.

Right, now I am off to see if i can work out how to do this blog thingy. Cheers Duncan
